Regardless of the physical condition that leads a person to rest, remaining in bed for prolonged periods is never positive. It causes adverse psychological changes as well as changes throughout the body.

Some consequences include:

  • Muscle weakness affecting coordination and balance.
  • Reduced exercise tolerance.
  • Risk of pneumonia, infection and hypoxia.
  • Loss of muscle.
  • Increased formation of stones.
  • Reduced appetite and constipation.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux.
  • Confusion, anxiety and depression.
